It all started with King and Woodside
The Arc Position Sensing (APS) technology was developed by Dr. Paul King and Dr. Rigel Woodside. Dr. Woodside worked on this technology development while obtaining his Doctoral degree under Dr. King at Oregon State University, and while they were both employed by the National Energy Technology Laboratory (NETL).

During this time, the APS System won numerous awards for technology development and technology transfer including:
- IEEE 12MTC Best Graduate Student Paper Award (2010)
- Federal Laboratory Consortium Far West Regional Award for Outstanding Technology (2013)
- R&D 100 Award as one of the top 100 innovations (2013)
